Nancy and I first went to a refugee camp in Namibia in May of 2000. The camp consisted mainly of refugees from a 27 year civil war in Angola. The people we met there were amazingly resilient, full of joy in the midst of hardship and sorrow, industrious without access to means, yet still willing to dream of a better future for themselves and their children. I learned so much from them. In 2002 the civil war ended and refugees began to return to their homeland of Angola. In speaking to leaders within the country and refugee community they expressed the need for education for their children particularly in the rural areas where nothing was being done and hadn’t been done for many years. So in 2003, Nancy and I were involved with several families under the leadership of Andrew and Lynn Cole in starting Rise International with the stated purpose of building schools in rural areas of Angola. To date Rise has built 180 schools serving over 128,000 children that wouldn’t have been in school otherwise. Build. Educate. Empower. This is how Rise has helped Angolans transform the futures of their children.
